How to get the fleas off of my puppy!?

I have a puppy at the age of 9 weeks and I've been noticing several fleas on him. What's a safe method I could use to get rid of them? Also, I'm planning to take him to the vet but I was wondering if he's old enough to get his shots? & around how much would his checkup be? Thanks (:
